Marine Stewardship Council

An international non‑profit organization established to address the problem of unsustainable fishing and safeguard seafood supplies for the future. MSC works with partners to promote sustainable fishing and transform markets by a series of labels and fishery certifications. The sustainability of a fishery is defined by MSC criteria which are embodied in three Principles: (P1) relating to the status of the stock, (P2) the ecosystem of which the stock is a member and (P3) the fishery management system. Each of these Principles is evaluated in relationship to Performance Indicators (PIs) within each Principle. Additionally, the MSC has established rigorous Guidelines for scoring fisheries (MSC Fishery Standard Principles and Criteria for Sustainable Fishing, Version 2.0 – effective 1 April 2015).
